Every so often the cords may need to be replaced because of overuse. In a few basic steps, anyone can quickly learn how to change a broken cord on a sash window without help. In addition to the new cords, having a small pry bar, flat head screw driver, putty knife, and small small nails can make the process easier.

First, take off the interior stop. This can be pried off with the putty knife or it can be unscrewed. Pull away the inner sash as carefully as possible. There are upward pieces inside the frame, called stile grooves, where the cords are tied in place. Pull them free and remove the weights. If it needs it, clean out the frame.

The third task is to open the parting strip from one of the jambs. A jamb is an upright support found in the window frame. This may be held in place with nails, so take care when pulling it off. Move the upper piece out of the way and take off the cords.

The next step is to deal with the weight pockets. You can find them by taking off the weather stripping. They’re usually behind plates near the bottom of the jambs. If you don’t see them here, you may have to look behind the inner casing. Once these are out of the way, you can get to the weights.

Make sure that the replacement cords are the right length and cut them if necessary. Take off the old ones and place them over the pulleys. String them from the pulleys to the weight pockets. Remember to loop the cords before tying them to the small metal bars in the weights. This is sometimes referred to as the “eye”.

You can make it a little easier on yourself by nailing the weights to the frame. Pull the weight up to the top of their pockets before you do. Now take the outer cords and attach them to their slots with a screw. Put the plates and weather stripping back and then replace the parting strip. You can take out the nails now. You next have to lift sash and tie the strings to the inner sash then put the whole thing back together.

It may be wise to replace all the cords at once to save time, even if they are not all broken. Chains can be used instead of cords if desired. A person can save some money by doing this themselves.
